Business failing to embrace web: report

Firms seen as failing online customers

GEOFF LONG

Melbourne, Australia - Despite its huge cost and reach advantages, the web is still a neglected channel for many call centre and customer support operations, according to speakers at the recent G-Force Asia Pacific event held at Melbourne's Crown Casino.

The message was also backed up by a new report from Genesys, the call centre software vendor that has been running the G-Force event for the past 10 years. The report suggested that investment in web channels was happening only slowly.

Jason Sterling, Genesys Australasia VP, told the G-Force audience of almost 900 that the failure to fully embrace web channels was a massive wasted opportunity. "I believe we're neglecting online customers," he said, advising companies that many are "hamstrung" by the current 20-year-old model used for operating contact centres.

He pointed to Internet-only operations such as Flowers.com that was proactively going after customers as an indicator of what could be achieved online. For example it would send out reminders for the many customers that tend to order flowers at the same time each year.

"They are a new breed of company that only exists through the Net and the contact centre," he said, warning companies that in future customer service could be one of the few competitive differentiators available to them.

One company that has embraced the web as a support channel is PC vendor Lenovo. Hongxin Shi, the company's customer contact centre manager, told the audience that each agent could handle four to five chat sessions at a time. As a result, web service now accounts for around 10 percent of Lenovo's contact centre traffic.

Jason Sterling

But the company is in the minority in offering a web chat channel, according to the most recent Contact Centre Realities report, the ninth to date. Genesys surveyed 230 contact centre managers from across Asia Pacific on their use of the Internet as an interactive channel. While many offer some form of email and web self-service, the report found the use of newer channels such as web chat to interact with customers was not widespread.

The adoption overall for web chat was eight percent, although in South Korea 22 percent of respondents were making use of it.

And of the companies that do not offer any form of live online help (such as web chat or click-for-call back), 70 percent have no plans to invest in it.

How long they can afford to continue to ignore new online channels is another matter, however. According to the survey, more than 60 percent of firms using web chat say it has boosted sales revenue.

Web-based service channels are also significantly less costly to support than phone service, according to most industry observers. Forrester Research, for example, has stated that the average telephone interaction costs four times more than live chat.

Another area where business are falling down, according to the report, is in the integration between web-based service and more traditional channels such as voice, both in terms of business "ownership" of the function and integration of information across channels. Only 15 percent of respondents said that internal business ownership of web-based channels was owned solely by the contact centre. More often it was shared with other departments, such as marketing, IT, sales or operations, or managed completely by a department other than the contact centre.

The study also found that organisational structure was not the only integration challenge businesses face today when bringing the web and contact centre together. Only 31 percent of respondents indicated that if a customer moves from web self-service to calling the contact centre, the receiving agent would be provided with information on the customer's self-service session.

The situation may be about to change, according to Steve Rutledge, Genesys product and solutions marketing VP. "2008 will be a major inflection point in web integration to the contact centre," he said.

Email Marketing

Email Marketing

There are numerous ways to market your website via email. We'll talk about the most effective methods.

Your Own Newsletter

Your own newsletter or e-zine can be an extremely effective method of marketing to your customers. You can offer an informational newsletter, updates, events, coupons, special offers etc. The possibilities are endless. If you are an expert in a certain area and offer free information, tips or advice, people will more likely sign up to receive your newsletter.

Ways of making money with a newsletter include sponsor ads and classified ads. You can also make recommendations for other resources or products available on the Internet and use an affiliate link to send your readers there. If they buy, you get a commission on their purchase. One of the best ways to generate revenue with your newsletter is to offer exclusive deals or coupons to subscribers. You should always make sure to include plenty of links back to your website, this will help to generate more traffic for your site. Since your subscribers came to your site and signed up to receive information from you, they are already interested in what you offer, they are ready made buyers! Be careful not to fill your newsletter with too much advertising though, some people will be annoyed and you may get a lot of people opting out!

If you will be offering an informational newsletter or e-zine, don't fill it with too much advertising. Remember that people can unsubscribe and trust me, they will if they get a bunch of ads and little useful information.

It is important to distinguish a newsletter/e-zine from an update list. An update list will mainly be made up of people who come to your commercial website and want to receive updates on your website, special offers, sales, coupons etc. These people will obviously not be expecting information but promotions from your website. Don't send them ads for other sites if they wanted ads from you, you should use an update list to sell what you offer only and to generate traffic to your site.

A professional informational newsletter should be sent out on a regular basis and conform to a certain basic schedule. For example, if you say your newsletter is weekly, then make sure you send it out once a week.

In closing, when people give your their email address, they are trusting you... do not violate that trust. Make sure you note in your newsletter that you do not sell your mailing list to anyone else and most importantly, make sure you give clear instructions as to how to unsubscribe from your list.

Creating a newsletter is easier than you think with the many free templates available online that you can use as a basic format and layout tool. Here are some good free template sites:

OSSWEB - This site will allow you to enter information into form fields and it will build you a great looking newsletter to send out! Very nice way to start your newsletter for beginners.

A1 Marketing Newsletter Template - A nicely formatted template that you can cut and paste. Creates a very clean and organized newsletter.

Newz2me Templates - Offers a number of templates for different types of newsletters.

Here is some cool free software to help you create your newsletter:

eZine Assistant

Newsletter/E-Zine Advertising

Another form of email marketing is purchasing or trading advertising in other newsletters/e-zines. This is a way of getting highly targeted leads for your website since there are thousands of newsletters that offer advertising and sponsorships. There is surely one or two or a hundred that cater to your target market. Here are some great sites where you can find targeted newsletters to advertise in:

E-zine-Directory - Lists e-zines by category.

E-zine Universe - Lists e-zines by category.

Opt-In Email Advertising

Yet another option for advertising via email is to purchase a targeted email ad campaign to an opt-in list. Opt-in simple means that the email addresses are "safe" to send to since the person has "opted" to receive email from the company for certain subjects. This is a painless way to advertise via email to highly targeted prospects, but can also be very expensive.

Spam!

Spam is the word used for any unsolicited email. This means we have not asked for or signed up to receive this email. Someone got your email address from a posting in a newsgroup, FFA or other ad or on a website and added your email address to their mailing list without asking permission. Whatever you do, don't use SPAM to promote your business. It will not only reflect poorly on you and your business but it could also get you into trouble with many ISP's and on the receiving end of some irate emails from the people you have spammed. Don't do it!!! Spamming can HURT your business, not help it.

Email Marketing Software

There are many programs that can help you manage your mailing lists and send out your mailings, here are some of the best:

Group Mail Free & Pro - A fantastic, easy to use program that makes it simple to import and export your email lists and send out your messages. Tons of options, yet not overwhelming. My personal choice for sending out my updates. There is even a free version of this program you can use.

Fairlogic WorldCast - Another free bulk mailer program. Also very good.

Email Marketing Services

You can also hire someone to manage your mailing list for you. Using a service for this can be expensive but certainly worth it if your mailing list is large enough.

How To Increase Your Link Popularity

How To Increase Your Link Popularity

Link popularity is very important to your site's success, no doubt about it. It's difficult to obtain high positions on some search engines without it.

So what is it exactly?

It's simply the number of sites that link to yours.

Having your link on any other website can help your link popularity score, but having your link on a RELATED site will increase your score much more. Concentrate on linking with related sites for better effectiveness.

Ways to increase your link popularity include reciprocal links, search engine submissions and software.

What engines use link popularity to help decide your search engine rankings?

Google and Altavista put the most weight into your link popularity score but Teoma (formerly Direct Hit) started it all. Most spider based search engines will take your link popularity into account when determining your rankings nowadays.

Reciprocal Links

Building links with other related sites is the easiest and best way to increase your link popularity. Not only do you get your popularity increased but you may get traffic from a prominent link on another related site. A simple way of building links to your site is to type your most important keywords into a search engine and see what sites come up. Focus your efforts on the higher quality and more established sites you find. Then write a short, polite letter to the webmaster of the site asking if they would like to trade links with you.

For some people, asking other webmasters for links may not be an option since they may be a competitor. There are other ways to increase your link popularity but they may not work as effectively as asking to trade links.

Search Engine Submissions

A link on Yahoo or Open Directory is a great way to build your link popularity. Since these directories are reviewed by an actual person and they review each site for quality, Google and Altavista will think your site must be of some quality for it to be in one of these directories, so your score will go up! This is yet another reason that Yahoo and Open Directory should be your first priority when starting to promote your website.

Link Popularity Building Software

Zeus

There are some good software programs that will help you build your link popularity. One that has been around awhile is called "Zeus". Zeus works by searching the net for related sites from information you enter. Zeus will create a sort of directory for you to upload to your site that include links to all these related sites it found. Then Zeus will send an email message to the webmasters of these sites for you saying that you have added a link to their site from your site. Some of these people will add your link to their site.

Arelis3

We have recently tried this program and found that it works very, very well in creating quality reciprocal links. This program has some important features that Zeus does not.

Axandra's Arelis3

Build Your Own Links

Let's say you have a site about tractors. You can create a tractor search engine, directory or links page featuring not only your own site but all the other tractor related sites out there. Then write an email to the webmaster of the sites you have included in your directory and ask them for a link back to the directory. Make it easy for them by creating a page where you place pre-made graphics and text links for them to copy and paste into their site. They will love that you have added their site to your directory and will often add the requested link.

You can also build an information site about tractors. Then feature your links on the site prominently. A free information site attracts visitors!

Other Way To Increase Link Popularity

Here are some tools to check your link popularity:

Widexl Link Popularity Check
JavaScriptKit Link Popularity Checker

There is even some software to help you increase your link popularity:

Total Site Preparation Tips

Total Site Preparation Tips

Before you go off submitting your site or doing some advertising, you'll want to make sure your site is ready to take advantage of the visitors it will receive.

Here are some things to keep in mind before you start promoting your website:

Does your site load quickly enough? Even though more and more people are taking advantage of high speed internet access, the majority of Internet users are still using a dialup connection. You should be sure your website loads in less than 20 seconds for your dialup users, though some research has shown that you typically have about 8 seconds to get the attention of your visitors before they decide to move on. This is called the "8 second rule", because of this, it's a good idea to pay strong attention to how long your site takes to load. Some good ideas to reduce load time include removal of unnecessary images and text, reducing the size of images and graphics, optimizing images and graphics for the web, avoiding excessively large graphics, avoiding use of animated images, making sure all images and tables have height and width tags. You can use a program to optimize your graphics and photos for web use, one good one is called WebGraphics Optimizer, it's a free download.

Is your site loading without errors and does it look correctly in all major browsers? You'll want to test your site in all the most popular web browsers and make sure it looks the same in each one. Often, Netscape or AOL users will see a slight differences in your website than IE users, make sure these differences are not harming their overall experience or keeping them from buying your products.

There are some free tools that can help alert you to serious problems:

You can validate your code at this site:

http://validator.w3.org/

You can test your browser compatibility at this site:

http://www.anybrowser.com/

Whatever you do, test, test, test, then test your site some more. Test everything yourself first. Then you should have your friends or family visit your site and make test purchases, ask them how it went and if they encountered problems. Was it easy to get around the site? Was the site pleasant to the eyes and made them feel safe buying from you? These are just some of the many questions you can ask.

Web Hosting

Your web host is also important. If your site responds slowly, if your site is down a lot, support slow or support responses not satisfactory, you'll want to consider moving to another hosting service. A good host will offer 99% or more uptime guaranteed, a 30 day money back guarantee, a toll-free support number at least during business hours and 24 hour email support. Remember that price does not reflect the quality of service, some cheap hosts may be very reliable and some expensive hosts may be terrible. Common sense will tell you that if a host offers $5 a month service, you're probably not going to be getting very good quality service. With a personal site, any old host will do, even the free ones will probably be fine. For a business, you'll want to check out some of the many host rating and review sites, you can find a good list here:

http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Hosting/Directories/?tc=1

Keep in mind that these "directories" often get a commission from sending the hosting companies new customers, so check out several sites and remember they may not be all that objective.

Site Monitoring

Once you are on a web host you are comfortable with, it's a great idea to have a 3rd party service check up on them. There are many free services that will do this for you and make sure your site is accessible at all times. They will send you a report via email when your site is down and when it is available again. Here is my favorite service:

InternetSeer

Site Design

For a business site, there are some things to keep away from and things to strive for, here are a few basic tips:

Strive for clear, easy navigation. Can your customers browse your site quickly and easily? Fancy navigation systems often confuse people. Consider having a backup text links system at the bottom of all your pages. Like this:

Home | About Us | Catalog | Order | Return Policy | Contact Us

It doesn't take up a lot of room and it will be very helpful should your fancy navigation scheme not load at all!

A site map and/or search engine for your site would help to make navigation easier and provide your visitor with more options for finding what they want on your site.

Colors

Colors can have a big effect on the mindset of your visitors. Some research has shown that people tend to buy less from sites with a dark background than from a light background. Also, the absolute easiest to read text happens to be what you are reading right now, plain old black on white! It gets the job done and it is easier on the eyes. To spice up the black on white text you can use different fonts and sizes plus bold and italic options to put emphasis on your writing. Just don't go overboard!

Colors can also be used to enhance your image. You should use colors that are pleasant to the eyes and give your site a professional feeling. Avoid using very bright colors excessively, they should usually be used as accents.

Graphics/Images/Clipart/Photos

As with colors, graphics should be used where they would be most effective and sparingly as they increase load time. Effective use of graphics and images can break up dull text and provide some color and excitement to a drab website. As with other elements, don't include too many images.

When stocking your web store, photos of your products should be as clear and precise in color as possible. It's a good idea to use thumbnails to keep load time down and help the user browse more easily, then offer the visitor a "click image to enlarge" option to see the full image if they wish.

Clipart can also be used effectively on business sites. For instance, a cute Christmas tree graphic to help illustrate a special Christmas season sale is a good use of clipart. Again, just don't go overboard. Clipart should be used sparingly and only when appropriate. Don't use the terrible clipart that comes with Microsoft FrontPage either! You can get some very good clipart for free or for a very small fee on sites like:

Freeze.com

ArtToday

Here's the Google listing of Clipart sites:

Preparing For Yahoo Or Other Human Reviewed Directories

Before submitting to Yahoo or Open Directory, be sure all your links are working and that your site is completely finished. Under construction or coming soon links will mean no listing for you! Don't submit until the site is 100% ready. Yahoo mainly looks for useful and/or unique content and good basic site design when considering your site for inclusion. Though, in my experience, the majority of sites that pay the $299 Express fee will be accepted.

Open Directory is more difficult. You'll usually have to wait for your review but they will not notify you if your site was accepted or rejected. If after a month or so, your listing is still not included in your desired category, try resubmitting. There are many reasons your site may be rejected from the Open Directory. Some reasons include too many banners or ads, not enough content, low quality content, URL re-direction, affiliate or cookie cutter sites, bad design and not being relevant to the category you are submitting to. If you think your site is of quality content and is relevant to the category, but still have not been accepted, then write a polite note to the editor of the category asking why your site was not included and if there is anything more you can do to be accepted. Often you'll find it is something simple, like maybe the editor rarely checks for new submissions!

Open Directory Tip

Once you've found the category you want to be in, scroll to the bottom of the page and see if the category already has an editor. If it doesn't, then apply to be the editor of that category. You must have some real qualifications to be editor of many categories but others have less stringent guidelines. Once you are editor, you can add your own site and make changes to other sites titles and descriptions and even add, remove and modify listings.

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization

Keywords

Picking the right keywords is crucial. You need to pick targeted phrases that get a good amount of searches in order for your search engine optimization to be effective. You don't want to choose words that are too general, or words that are too focused! It can be tricky. You don't want keywords that are too general because there will be millions of other pages found under those searches, your chances of being in the top 10 or even top 30 are very, very small. If you choose words that are too targeted, there is much less competition, therefore is is much easier to be in the top listings, however, not a lot of people probably search for that keyword, it certainly doesn't help if you are #1 for a word no one is searching for. That won't bring you many visitors, if any at all. Balance is the key, you want to pick keywords that people are searching for but that are not too competitive. It certainly helps if your site is in a niche area. Your job will be much easier. I recommend using targeted phrases of 2 or 3 keywords. Put yourself in the shoes of your prospective customer, what would you type in if you were on a search engine and looking for your product or service? Ask friends, family members and colleagues for their opinions on what they would use if they were looking for your company. If you have competitors who are already on the net, look at their website for ideas. You can view their keywords meta-tags, if they included one, by right clicking on the page and selecting "View Source", that will launch your text editor and you will view their code. Look for their list of keywords. You can get some very good ideas from your competitors but never just copy and paste anything from someone else's site, that's bad netiquette! Carefully craft your own keyword list instead, it will be to your advantage anyway.

When creating your keyword list, don't leave out any common misspellings, singular and plural versions, shortened and alternate versions of words.

Here are some excellent resources for putting together that all-important list of keywords and phrases:

Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool - Should be your first stop! Bookmark it!

WordTracker

Once you've got your keyword list down, continue
on...

Title

The title is the single most important element you can optimize! Pay attention to it. If you optimize nothing else, optimize your title. Just about every major and not so major search engine will look at this tag for keywords and their placement in it. The title is what will show up as the title of your listing on all the engines plus it is shown at the top of the browser window when a visitor is at your site, plus it is shown as the title of your link should a visitor bookmark your website. You want to include your most important keywords in the title, but keep it short, as too many keywords will lessen the "relevance" or effectiveness the keywords that are included will have. It's a good idea to have no more than 6-10 keywords in your title.

This is what the title looks like in your code:

Title text goes here

Here are some examples of good and bad titles:

New Page 1

Very BAD Title - This is the standard title given to new pages in Microsoft FrontPage. Useless.

My Company Name Home Page

BAD Title - This title includes your company name but fails to include any keywords at all, it is highly unlikely that people would search for your company name.

My Company Name - keyword phrase, keyword phrase

Good Title - This title contains your company name but also 2 different keyword phrases. This title would be effective in your search engine listings as it gives your company name but also an idea of what you offer in the keyword phrases AND it gives the search engines keyword phrases in your title. This title would also be good as a bookmarked link.

keyword phrase, keyword phrase at My Company Name

Good Title - Same as above but places the keyword phrases closer to the beginning of the tag for maximum effectiveness.

Whatever keywords you choose, it's also a good idea to look at the listings for that particular keyword or phrase on sites like Google, Altavista and HotBot and see what sites are coming up first and what their keyword placement is like. Take your cue from them but don't copy them.

Body Text

As meta-tags continue to lose effectiveness, body text seems to be rising in importance. The body text is the normal text that appears on your site. What you are reading right now is body text. It should be descriptive and keyword rich but also "sell" your product and instill confidence in your company and whatever it offers. Seems like an awful lot to do, but your body text will make up much of the content of your website so you must craft it with care. Remember, keyword rich but descriptive while selling your company and it's products. Be liberal with the features and benefits the customer will receive if they contact or purchase from you.

Keyword Density

Keyword density is simply the ratio of a keyword or phrase to the total words in your page. Some quot;experts" recommend the density for your important keywords be between 1% and 7%, which means 1-7 words out of every 100 words will be your keyword or phrase. However, there is no magic number as far as keyword density.

Meta-tags

Meta-tags are not as important as they once were. This is due to people including irrelevant keywords or too many keywords, in other words, abusing the meta-tags to the point that they had little or no effect. Most search engines don't read the keywords or description meta-tags anymore. However, some engines and smaller engines still do. So it's smart to include them anyway.

Here are some example meta-tags and how they should be used:

Its best to keep the text inside each tag down to 10-20 total words.

The meta-tags should be INSIDE of the tag in your code, if they are not, they will not be read.

Heading Tags

To optimize with the heading tag, you should take the keyword or phrase you want to optimize and use it as a heading. Since a heading usually gives an important idea about what a website is about, the search engines will think that your site must have a strong relation to this phrase.

The heading tag looks like this:

Your Keyword Phrase

You can usually make it any font size in a good editor but some will force the font to be very, very large.

Page File Names

This page file name is "site_optimization.htm", this is self explanatory. There is some evidence that suggests that naming your files with keywords or phrases can be very effective.

Example optimized file names for Classy Classics Vintage Jewelry:

vintage_jewelry.htm

costume_jewelry.htm

designer_jewelry.htm

signed_costume_jewelry.htm

Link Names

There is also some evidence that suggests that having keywords in your links can increase your rankings for those keywords.
Here is an example:

Keyword Phrase

Alternate Image Text

The alternate image text is what a visitor will see when your graphics do not load for whatever reason. It is helpful to have alternate text for the search engines as well as your visitors. Some search engines do look at this tag for keywords. The alternate text is simply another addition to your code, here is an example image tag with the alternate text code portion in bold text:

alt="description of link with keywords">

The alternate text should include a description of the image but also try to include some important keywords too, keep it short.

Font Sizes

Some search engines will give more relevance to the words that are in larger font size than the rest of your text. Words that are written in large font sizes can be assumed as important since they must be headings to a portion of body text or other content. Larger font sizes are usually considered as 4 or 14 pt or above. Examples below in Arial:

Text - 1 (8 pt)

Text - 2 (10 pt)

Text -3 (12 pt)

Text - 4 (14 pt)

Text - 5 (18 pt)

Text - 6 (24 pt)

Text - 7 (36 pt)

Also, the presence of very small text, usually example 1, especially in large masses, may be construed as "spamming"! try to avoid using size 1 or 8 point fonts.

NoFrames Tag

When a site has frames, it is extremely important that the designer make use of the noframes tag. It looks like this:

Keyword rich description of your website.

Since most search engines will not be able to venture past your frames, they need something with keywords to read. This is where the noframes tag come in. Not only do the search engines read this but if a person comes to your site and they are using a web browser that does not have frames support, this is what they will see.

When using frames, you should consider having an entrance before your frames to submit to the search engines. The noframes tag can help but you still run the risk of not being indexed by search engines because they cannot get into internal pages of your website.

Thing To Avoid (and may get you banned or rejected)

  • Little or no body text or content - When you have very little or no body text on your page at all, some search engines will take this to mean that you have no content on your website worth indexing! Body text is a must.
  • URL redirection - If you are re-directing your URL from a registrar or other host, a search engine spider may not be able to follow the re-direct to the destination page and may not add you because of this! If a re-direction is unavoidable, you'll either want to submit the destination page of the re-direction or create a search engine optimized doorway page on the index page of the site that has the re-direct.
  • JavaScript/CSS - These elements have been known to have an effect on indexing. They are used widely in site design, so I would hope that the search engines have gotten smarter about it. Javascript is a jumble of coding that the search engines do not understand. It's something to think about if you are having trouble getting listed and have one of these elements on your site.
  • Large file size - This refers to the total size of the code. If your site has insane amounts of text, your file size could be very large. A search engine spider may give up if the site takes a long time to read. This is another reason why it is a good idea to break up large amounts of text to separate pages.
  • Keyword stuffing - This refers to large amounts of keywords placed together on a page. Here is an example:

keyword, keywords, keyword phrase, keyword phrases, keyphrase, phrase, keyphrases

keyword, keywords, keyword phrase, keyword phrases, keyphrase, phrase, keyphrases

keyword, keywords, keyword phrase, keyword phrases, keyphrase, phrase, keyphrases

keyword, keywords, keyword phrase, keyword phrases, keyphrase, phrase, keyphrases

keyword, keywords, keyword phrase, keyword phrases, keyphrase, phrase, keyphrases

Keyword stuffing can get you banned, don't do it.
  • Tiny text - Tiny text has been used, often with keyword stuffing to try and subvert a search engine's results. Try to avoid excessive use of small text.
  • Flash - Flash can be a fantastic element in web design, you can create an entire site in Flash or just use it in smaller elements. Flash is great as a part of web design but can be poison to the search engines. If you are going to use Flash, you might want to create an entrance page without flash that is search engine optimized, this page should be submitted to the search engines.
  • Hidden text - This refers to text that is the same color as the page background. Search engines will think you are trying to hide this text from them. A big no-no.
  • Fancy navigation - A fancy navigation scheme can make it difficult for a search engine spider to crawl other pages of your website.
  • Frames - As explained in the noframes tag area above.
  • Cheap hosting - If you've chosen a cheap host for your website, they will often place your site on the same server as many other websites and all of them under the same IP address. This is very,
very bad! If you have the same IP address as other sites already in a search engine's database, they may not accept your site. If you have the same IP address of someone who has been banned from the search engines, you may be banned as well. Also, your site may be slow or inaccessible because another website on your server is hogging all the resources. This can also cause your site to be rejected if the search engine spider visits your website during a down time. Spend a little more to get a unique IP address and more reliable service. The Budget Webmaster?s 6 Step Guide to Improving Existing Rankings in Google

The Budget Webmaster's 6 Step Guide to Improving Existing Rankings in Google

You know the scenario. You get an occasional click from Google for a certain keyword. You go to find out why you aren't getting more clicks, and you find out that you're ranked in the 30's, 50's, or heaven forbid, the 300's. "Great", you think, "I finally get ranked for a good keyword and it's a worthless ranking".

Not necessarily.

If you got ranked for a keyword you wanted At All, the game's not over yet. If your site's content is geared towards that subject, you can get your ranking in search engines increased, at no cost. How?

The first thing you want to do is find out how well you are ranked for this keyword. For Google in particular, this used to be a difficult chore. In the old days of 2003, you'd spend your valuable time doing a search on your desired keyword, then a sub-search for your site, and crawling through pages of listings to find out exactly where you stood.

Now there is hope in the form of the following website. Direct your browser to:

http://www.googlerankings.com/index.php

You can use this site to find out what number you come up for in the Google listings, which can be very powerful information if used correctly. If you're ranked in the top 1000, you have a shot at raising your listing for that page by tweaking the page to be a little more relevant.

So, secondly, you have to know how good a shot you have at getting a better listing. Go to:

http://www.searchguild.com/difficulty/

I posted a tip about this a month ago, and it's also in the free optimization Guide I released the week of March 7th. It tells you how hard it is to rank well for certain keywords in Google. You'll need a free Google API key to use it.

Now that you know your chances, the third piece of information you need to know is how much traffic you can expect. Digital Point has a free tool that gives an approximation of how many hits per day a good ranking gets. Access it here:

http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/

Okay, let's say everything checks out so far. You rank in the top 1000. The term you want won't be that hard to get, and will get you enough traffic per month to justify your efforts.

Our fifth step is to take the term you chose and optimize your page.

This site does periodic reports on the search engines, and their February report gives their analysis of what the best ranking pages in Google have in common. And as a free bonus, it will also tell you what Yahoo wants. Follow the following link for details-http://www.gorank.com

Now that you know what to shoot for, you need to know how the page you want will measure up- you need to calculate your keyword density. You can also do the sixth step at gorank.com - it has a free tool that will calculate it for you. Prepare your page with that in mind, re-upload, and you're almost done.

Great, you're all set. Now you should submit your site to Google, right?

Wrong. Absolutely not. If you can help it, you should never, ever submit any page of your site to Google. Let it find you. HOW it finds you can affect your page rank. I don't mean that there is a standard penalty for submitting. There's been speculation on that for a while but I have yet to prove it matters.

What I DO know from personal experience and testing on my member's sites, is that getting the Googlebot search engine spider to happen upon your site shaves up to 6 weeks off the standard time it takes for indexing. You can show up in Google in as little as 4 days.

Which site links to you can also affect your Google Page Rank. While this is not as important as it once was, it still carries significant weight? my site didn't start getting spidered on a daily basis until my Page Rank increased to 5.

So even if the spider comes to your site on a Monthly basis, you're better off waiting for the spider to come back by. That's the seventh step, let your page be re-discovered with it's great new changes.

And yes, there's an even faster, better way to get Google.com's search engine spider to re-index that page, but that's another article, isn't it?

If Content is King, then surely Relevance is Queen!

There has been a lot of to-ing and fro-ing in the search

engine world of late and there are lots of conspiracy
theories as to why these things happen.

It is easy as a webmaster to get caught up in these webs of
intrigue.

You get email notes about them, you view so-called experts'
thoughts on bulletin Boards - hey you probably even read
things in newsletter articles!

Well I hope so anyway....

The big driver for webmasters currently appears to be
content and link building.

While link building is important I don't believe it makes
Queen. Maybe a Prince. Content and links DO go hand in
hand but, without relevance, the Kingdom is doomed. Sorry I
will stop the analogy now! :-)

If your site is about finance, then finance content is best
supported by finance link exchanges. Relevance!

If your site is about finance, then finance content
supported by casino link exchanges from a PR8 site while in
the short term may help,?but all the signs are saying this
is not a long term strategy.

Okay,so what is the best strategy?

Keep EVERYTHING relevant. It is that simple.

Make sure that you only swap or link to sites that are
relevant to the content on your pages. Yes I am suggesting
link exchanging on pages of your site not a links page.

Links pages seem to be being abused. There are rumours that
pages called links, resources or partners are not passing
page rank. You could be wasting your time building links
that are not giving you any benefits!

Delivering relevant links from relevant content is the
future.

Look at sites such as www.bbc.co.uk or
www.independent.co.uk. News sites have the right idea.
They have 2 or 3 relevant internal links to other
articles on the same topic or links to internal tools that
are related. These usually can be found at the right hand
side of the article.

They also then have weblinks or external links to sites of
interest that are related to the topic. These are relevant!

Another benefit of this is that with a content rich site you
can add hundreds of links quite legitimately and really add
some value both to your Rankings and your users.

With a content-poor site it is difficult, you have to add
link pages or create a links directory. A five page site
will need to add 10 or 12 good link pages to compete and
even then with algorithm changes, this may not be prudent.

Having a site with 400 pages means you can easily add 3
links per page, so you have 1200 link options straight away.

Hopefully this explains that relevance runs a close second
to content.

Always bear in mind when writing content that relevant
links will not only boost your search engine rankings,
but you will also add a service to your visitors.

Get Better Search Engine Rankings with RSS

RSS is the latest craze in online publishing. But what exactly is RSS?

RSS or Rich Site Syndication is a file format similar to XML, and is used by publishers to make their content available to others in a format that can be universally understood.

RSS allows publishers to "syndicate" their content through the distribution of lists of hyperlinks.

It has actually been around for a while, but with the advent of spam filters and online blogging, it is fast becoming the choice of ezine publishers who want to get their message across to their subscribers.

However, not much attention has been given to the advantages RSS provides for search engine optimization.

Why Search Engines Love RSS

Many SEO experts believe that sites optimized around themes,or niches, where all pages correspond to a particular subject or set of keywords, rank better in the search engines.

For example, if your website is designed to sell tennis rackets, your entire site content would be focused around tennis and tennis rackets.

Search engines like Google seem to prefer tightly-themed pages.

But where does RSS figure in all this?

RSS feeds, usually sourced from newsfeeds or blogs, often correspond to a particular theme or niche.

By using highly targeted RSS feeds, you can enhance your site's content without having to write a single line on your own.

It's like having your own content writer - writing theme-based articles for you - for free!

How can RSS improve my Search Engine Rankings?

There are three powerful reasons why content from RSS Feeds is irresistible bait for search engine spiders.

1. RSS Feeds Provide Instant Themed Content

There are several publishers of RSS feeds that are specific to a particular theme.

Since the feed is highly targeted, it could contain several keywords that you want to rank highly for.

Adding these keywords to your pages helps Google tag your site as one with relevant content.

2. RSS Feeds Provide Fresh, Updated Content

RSS feeds from large publishers are updated at specific intervals. When the publisher adds a new article to the feed, the oldest article is dropped.

These changes are immediately effected on your pages with the RSS feed as well. So you have fresh relevant content for your visitors every hour or day.

3. RSS Feeds Result in More Frequent Spidering

One thing I never anticipated would happen as a result of adding an RSS feed to my site was that the Googlebot visited my site almost daily.
To the Googlebot, my page that had the RSS feed incorporated into it was as good as a page that was being updated daily, and in its judgement, was a page that was worth visiting daily.

What this means to you, is that you will have your site being indexed more frequently by the Googlebot and so any new pages that you add to your site will be picked up much faster than your competitors.

How does this benefit you as a marketer?

Well, for example, let's says a top Internet Marketer comes out with a new product that you review and write up a little article on, and that your competitors do the same.

Google generally tends to index pages at the start of the month and if you miss that update, you will probably need to wait till the next month to even see your entry in.

But, since your site has RSS feeds, it now gets indexed more frequently. So the chances of getting your page indexed quickly are much higher.

This gives you an advantage over the competition, as your review will show up sooner in the search results than theirs.

Imagine what an entire month's advantage could do to your affiliate sales!

Why Javascript Feeds Are Not Effective

Some sites offer javascript code that generates content sourced from RSS feeds for your site.

These are of absolutely no value in terms of search engine rankings, as the googlebot cannot read javascript and the content is not interpreted as part of your page.

What you need is code that parses the RSS feed and renders the feed as html content that's part of your page.

This is achieved using server side scripting languages like PHP or ASP.

A good free ASP script is available from Kattanweb
http://www.kattanweb.com/webdev/projects/index.asp?ID=7

An equally good PHP script is CARP
http://www.geckotribe.com/rss/carp/

So in conclusion, besides optimizing on page and off page factors, adding RSS feeds to your pages should be an important part of your strategy to boost your search engine rankings.
